When I did the school run the other day, one of the other mum’s commented that ‘she didn’t recognise me’ as I wasn’t in Lycra! You see Lycra is pretty much my life! I’m either at ‘work’ at the gym, recording LIVE videos for you guys or training PT clients. All of which require Lycra!! Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Lycra, and it has so many advantages; it’s flexible and expands as you do after a big meal (!), it washes and dries within minutes, it doesn’t require any thinking about ‘what shall I wear today’ and the biggest advantage is that now it also LOOKS amazing! Thanks to such wonderful brands like Sweaty Betty, sportswear has now become leisurewear and it’s now designed to make us all look good as well as be uber comfortable. It holds you in in all the right places – making your legs look slimmer, your tummy flatter and your bottom perter!!
In fact, Lycra has now become a very perfectly acceptable uniform to wear on the school run, to the coffee shop and even the supermarket. There are the ‘Sweaty Betty’ tribes who wear the latest designs and prints, who are always first to pick up the newest Sweaty Betty/Lululemon collections, who don their Lycra day and night….and let’s face it…..the closest that that sportswear is actually going to get to the gym is when the wearer parks in the gym carpark in order to walk to the coffee shop!!….they belong to the ‘all the gear and no idea’ tribe! However my relationship with Lycra is slightly different!…it’s my uniform, my daily attire and if I’m honest I’d be truly lost without it!…I must admit that I struggle on a Sunday with what to wear!…If I’m not in lycra then I’m not sure what else I should be wearing!…wearing jeans just feels restrictive!….wearing a skirt feels unnatural, and if I’m wearing leggings then they may as well be made of Lycra as they give me more support and hold me in in all the right places!…so for now, I’ll say you can keep your cotton, your silk and your polyester….for me, Lycra is and will always be my very first choice!!
